As the keynotes for the Vision Summit 2016 are drawing to a close, one of the last speakers to take to the stage was Oculus VR’s founder and creator of the Oculus Rift, Palmer Luckey. Talking to John Riccitiello, CEO, Unity Technologies, Palmer discussed the development of the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD), and Oculus VR’s combined project with Samsung, Gear VR.
Whilst talking about the Oculus Rift, Luckey has revealed anyone who pre-orders the HMD free four month trial of Unity Pro to stimulate content creation. This has been arranged with Unity Technologies due to the game engines popularity in designing virtual reality (VR) titles. Luckey then mentions the Gear VR and the titles that are currently available for the mobile headset, saying: “Something like 90% of projects on Gear VR are made using Unity”. That’s a bold statement as Unity has fierce competition from Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4 and Crytek’s CRYEngine middleware.
